Good Cause Eviction

Legislative Campaign
2023–2024

When New York tenant organizers pushed through a historic package of rent reforms in 2019 one of the strongest bills, Good Cause Eviction, was cut from the deal. The bill gives tenants in good standing the right to challenge rent hikes above a legal threshold, creating near-universal protections for New York renters. For the next five years, the fight for Good Cause would largely define New York State politics, pitting an increasingly powerful real estate lobby against working-class New Yorkers.

For the 2023 and 2024 legislative sessions, I worked with Housing Justice for All — a coalition of more than 80 housing organizations fighting to win power for tenants across the state — to design their campaign materials and direct mail campaigns using clear, bold slogans to pressure targets and mobilize tenants on the doors.
Good Cause Eviction (A.5573/S.1603) passed in April 2023 and is now law.
